The Best Mulled Wine Recipe

With the Autumn/ Winter season approaching mulled wine is the perfect drink to make on a cold night. There are plenty of recipes online to choose from and I’ve got the perfect one for you!

This tasty wine is known by many names depending on where in the world life may find you. So, cosy up with this mulled wine, turn on some music, pop on a movie, light some candlesFollow the foolproof recipe below plus these top tips so your mulled wine will turn out perfectly every time.  


Top Tips: 

Choose your wine carefully. Using an affordable bottle of Merlot, Zinfandel or Garnacha. These wines are dark, fruity and full bodied which means they can support all the flavours you'll be adding. 

Being patient with the process. Heating it gently otherwise cranking the heat on high too quickly will make your wine taste too spicy and syrupy as well as the alcohol evaporates.  

Don’t go crazy on the spices. You’ll be surprised how few spices you need to add to the wine. By your second glass, you'll have changed your mind.  

The ingredients you'll need to serve 8-10 people 

  • 10 whole cloves  
  • 2 whole star anise  
  • 2 cinnamon quills 
  • 2 bay leaves 
  • 1 orange finely sliced 
  • 2 cups of fruit juice  
  • 1 cup of caster sugar 
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract  
  • 2 bottles of wine  
  • ½ cup of orange liqueur (optional) 


Combining all these ingredients except wine and liqueur to simmer in a large pot until the sugar dissolves taking roughly 15 minutes.  

Adding wine and liqueur reducing the heat to a low and allow to warm through without boiling taking roughly 5 to 10 minutes.  

Optional to strain the ingredients out of the liquid or leaving if desired to continue emulsifying.
